January 1, 1945: Operation Bordenplatte

The last major offensive operation of the Luftwaffe during World War II, Operation Bordenplatte was a mass attack by the Luftwaffe on New Years Day 1945 on Allied air bases in Belgium and Holland in an attempt to gain air superiority in their stalled Battle of the Bulge offensive.  Surprise was achieved and 232 Allied planes were destroyed, almost all of them on the ground, and 156 damages.  However 143 German pilots were lost.  With their massive superiority in material, the Allies made good their plane losses within a week.  The Germans could not replace their pilots, and for the remaining 17 weeks of the War, the Luftwaffe in the West simply was not a factor.
