Published in 1857, the song was written by James Lord Pierpont.  Originally the song was considered somewhat racy and often was sung at drinking parties where the clinking of ice in glasses supplied the jingling.  Eventually it became a children’s song and became associated with Christmas.  It is perhaps the most widely known and sung of all American songs.
