Lili Marlene


Something for the weekend.  Lili Marlene (1937) sung by Marlene Dietrich, the famed film actress who despised the Nazis who took over her native Germany, and spent a good part of World War II entertaining American and British troops. After the War she became a naturalized American citizen. She was awarded the Medal of Freedom for her entertainment of the troops during World War II, and said that of all the honors and awards she received during her life she was proudest of it.  She would raise her skirts a bit above her knees while entertaining the troops after telling them she was going to show them something Hitler would never see.

The song was a favorite of soldiers on all sides.  Here is an English version sung by Vera Lynn:
