September 3, 1862: Lee Writes to Davis

On September 4, 1862, Lee began his Maryland campaign.  Lee had several goals.  First, to take the pressure off Virginia for a time and resupply his Army courtesy of captured Union supplies in Maryland.  Second, hopefully gain recruits from Marylanders sympathetic to the Confederacy.  Third, a successful campaign on Northern turf could lower Union morale prior to the fall elections and lead to Republican defeats.  Here is Lee’s letter to Jefferson Davis which he wrote on September 3, 1862: (more…)
