Playhouse 90: Judgment at Nuremberg

The things you find on the internet.  Broadcast on April 16, 1959, a television rendition of Judgment at Nuremberg, an episode of Playhouse 90 on CBS.

Claude Rains, he of Casablanca “Shocked” fame, has the role of Judge Dan Haywood that would be filled by Spencer Tracy in the 1961 film.  Maximilian Schell and Werner Klemperer both have the same roles they will have in the film. Hungarian-American actor Paul Lukas gives a riveting performance as Ernst Janning, the former Minister of Justice who refused to have his guilt, and that of his fellow defendants, obscured by defense counsel.

Broadcast live, the televised play has an immediacy that the film could not match.  Television at its finest.
