February 2, 1865: Battle of River’s Bridge Begins

In 1865 the remaining fighting was very lopsided in favor of the Union.  A typical example is the battle of River’s Bridge which began on February 2, 1865.  Major General Lafayette McLaws gathered together 1200 Confederates to dispute Sherman’s crossing of the Salkehatchie River.  Delayed for a day, Sherman flanked McLaw’s force the next day and proceeded on his way to wreak havoc on the state capitol of South Carolina, Colombia.
