Nevada and the Longest Telegraph

Nevada has emblazoned on its flag:  Battle Born, a memory of Nevada’s role in the Civil War.  Nevada sent off  from its tiny population 1200 men to fight for the Union.  A substantial minority of the population sympathized with the Confederacy, especially around Virginia City, but they were dominated by the majority of the population that was fervently Union in sentiment.  The most crucial contribution of Nevada to Union victory was silver from the Comstock lode that provided $400, ooo, ooo.00 to fuel the Union war effort.
