Westinghouse Studio One: Abraham Lincoln

From 1948-1958 Westinghouse sponsored 466 teleplays on CBS in an hour long series known as Westinghouse Studio One.  The above video was broadcast in 1952 and consists of vignettes of Lincoln during his years as President.  It is an example of Fifties TV drama at its best.  The episode is notable for the appearance of James Dean as a Union soldier slated for execution due to sleeping on guard duty, who is spared by Lincoln.  In our age of television largely consisting of smarmy sex, mindless violence, inane reality shows and unwatchable sit-coms and sit-dramas, it is good to look back at a better time.
