Civil War Historians on Why the Civil War is Important: Gary Gallagher

Beginning a series in which Civil War historians explain why the Civil War is important.  First up is Gary Gallagher, who, in his most recent work, The Union War, reminds us that the primary goal of the North in the Civil War was the preservation of the Union, something that we have lost sight of in recent decades.  This is a companion piece to his The Confederate War that appeared in 1999 and emphasized the committment to establishing a new nation as what sustained the South throughout four bloody years.
