The Battle of the Benjamins

Judah P. Benjamin, ante-bellum Senator from Louisiana, and the Jewish member of the Confederate cabinet, was a truly fascinating character and will, in the fullness of time, be the subject of many posts on this blog.   He once responded to Senator Benjamin Wade of Ohio calling him a “Hebrew with Egyptian principles” during a debate on slavery on the Senate floor, with this memorable riposte: “It is true that I am a Jew, and when my ancestors were receiving their Ten Commandments from the immediate Deity, amidst the thundering and lightnings of Mt. Sinai, the ancestors of my opponent were herding swine in the forests of Great Britain.”
