The First Census-1790


This year is a census year and I received a notice today from the Census that my form to complete will be arriving next week.  Oh joy unrestrained!  The first US Census began on August 2, 1790.  Go here for some of the raw data from this census.  The first census counted a total of 3,929,326 inhabitants of which 697,681 were slaves.  The largest city was New York with 33,000 people, followed by Philadelphia with 28,000, Boston with 18,000, Charleston with 16,000 and Baltimore with 13.000.  The mean center of Population was located 23 miles east of Baltimore.  The entire cost of the census was $44, 377.
