No conflict in American history has more names than our Civil War, a tribute to both the passions that struggle involved and the intensity with which Americans since the ending of the War have studied it. For generations it has commonly been known as the Civil War in the North and the War Between the States in the South. The Official Records of the War deemed the conflict the War of the Rebellion, a name which has never caught on.
