A light-hearted look at the conflict over the so-called Tariff of Abominations which came close to causing a war between South Carolina and the US in 1832-1833. That it did not was due both to compromise on the tariffs, but also because the tariff issue was not a purely sectional issue like slavery. There were a fair number of Southerners who were in favor of a protective tariff and a fair number of Northerners who were opposed to protective tariffs, and the tariff issue was more a party issue between the Democrats and the Whigs, than a sectional issue.
