The Confederate Regular Army

 

Almost all Confederate soldiers who served in the ranks during the Civil War served in the Provisional Army of the Confederate States.  This was strictly a wartime force and would have been disbanded if the Confederacy had won the war.  In addition to this force, the Army of the Confederate States of America was created, which was to serve as the Regular Army of the Confederacy.  The authorized strength of this force was 15, 015 men and 744 officers.  Most high ranking Confederate officers held commissions in the Army of the Confederate States.
